BB #71: So Many Spaceships

Welcome to the continuing monthly EVE Blog Banters and our 71st edition! For more details about what the blog banters are, please visit the Blog Banter page.

We all like important Internet spaceships, right? The more spaceships, the better, right? Or are we getting too many to easily remember them all? A Mastodon on scan? What the hell is that and what does it do? Oh! Never mind!

Are we getting too many ships? Is it too complicated to remember them all, and what their traits are? Do FC's these days need an encyclopedic knowledge of ship types unless they want their fleet to DIAF? With more and more ships being released each year, will we ever reach "too many" or do you think there can never be too many important Internet spaceship types?

Being a natural collector at heart, I both love and loathe the diversity of spaceships in EVE Online.

I am one of those people who, after acquiring the first of a series of anything, then feel unfulfilled until the complete set is fully retained. Some consider this a personality flaw, and perhaps they are correct. Regardless, it is what it is - a strong feeling that I must own them all, or things just don't seem right.

When I first started playing EVE Online in 2009, I flew Gallente ships exclusively, and soon vowed to myself that I would own, and be able to pilot, the entire line of hybrid-laden, drone-carrying, cyan-ish, organic-looking vessels. I can still recall how contented I felt when I finally docked the last Gallente ship in my hangar.

But then I cross-trained and began acquiring Gurista pirate ships, thus beginning yet another cycle of longing and incompleteness, until this entirely new line was eventually tucked away safely in my hangars.

And so it has gone, again and again, as I have cross-trained into all the other races.

Just one of my many, many hangars laden with ships. So many spaceships....

Maintaining the completeness of my ship collection has become more of a struggle over the last couple of years, as CCP has released new ships with more regularity. I always seem to be a little behind the curve. If this is CCP's intention, they are executing their sinister plan perfectly. It's like they are always dangling a tasty treat in front of me, forever keeping it just out of reach.

The release of SKINs has made my collecting habit a nightmare, however. I have been unable to keep up with all the design variants, and this is causing me to develop more than a bit of despair. With each patch that contains a bunch of new SKINs, I find myself shaking my fist at my PC screen angrily, saying, "Damn you, CCP!" And then I start figuring out how much it is going to cost me to get the Aurum I need.

Yes, collecting ships in EVE Online is an affliction. It is both my burden, and my never-ending joy. I hope it never ends.

Fly safe! o7
