If CCP was Santa and you could ask for anything (in-game obviously) what would it be? A new type of ship that is tailored to your game-play? A change to mechanics? A battleship mini-doomsday weapon? Proper hats for your avatar? Opening of that bloody door? There are so many different options depending on what you do and what you want to get out of Eve Online. What would you like to see in your virtual Christmas stocking from CCP?
I often ponder what kinds of new things I'd like to see added to EVE Online. While I love playing the game as it already is, and though I am impressed with CCP's steady releases of new additions and updates, I admit with some hesitancy that I would really love to be able to do some things that are currently impossible in New Eden. To that end, I keep a "maybe, someday" wish list ready for the Yule Lads at CCP Games.
Meaningful wardecs, please!
As I've written about in this blog several times before, I think the current war declaration mechanics are just plain silly. I'd love to see war actually mean something in New Eden, and that it provides meaningful and fun gameplay for both the aggressor and defender. I have hopes that the introduction of Citadels in the game may eventually help to improve wardec mechanics, but we shall have to wait and see if and how CCP decides to pursue that kind of development.
I'm encouraged that people are at least talking about wardecs, and speculating about how they might be improved. Jason Quixos has started to assemble the various perspectives of knowledgeable EVE Online players in a document, which you can see and comment upon here. Many of the ideas are simply iterations of the the current status quo, sadly - but there are some others that are innovative and interesting. I hope the CSM and the devs at CCP give this a read, and take up this challenge soon.
Expanded corporations, please!
CCP Seagull's development roadmap for EVE Online includes a focus on revamping corporations and alliances. I suspect that this goes beyond the simplification of administration duties, some of which we've already seen, and redefines the structure and purposes of political entities in the game.
One possible change may include support for social organizations, such as NPSI fleet groups, which aren't a dedicated corporation in the current sense, but which share a bond focused on a common purpose. Enabling players to join and communicate in societal affiliations, in addition to their formal corporation, alliance or coalition, would enable them to cooperate more effectively in a variety of projects. This could go far beyond just banding together for bombing runs or fleet roams. Social groups could also include support for in-game projects that cross corporation lines, similar to the previous Arek'Jalaan initiative.
But I'd also like to see corporations evolve into a whole new type of gameplay in EVE Online. Specifically, I'd like to see the introduction of a stock market in the game, where players could "go public" and issue stock in their corps for public trading. This would require better standardized reporting of a corporations's assets (a balance sheet) and earnings (an income statement). The opportunities abound for economic CvC (corp versus corp) competition: stock scams and manipulation, hostile takeovers, player-owned megacorporations - a whole new level of economic gameplay would open up.
Yes, this would be a big development effort, and likely will never come to fruition, but one can hope.
Population and crews, please!
I've written before about incorporating the concept of populations into EVE Online game mechanics. There are thousands of inhabited planets and stations in New Eden, and yet we capsuleers operate as if the common people don't matter. Nor do we directly exploit them for our own purposes. I was hopeful that the concept of Teams in the Crius industry update would be a step towards using native population as a useful resource, but that ill-conceived feature was not very popular, and CCP ultimately shelved it.
At the very least, I hope that CCP adds crew management to the game. I think it would be a lot of fun to recruit and develop specialized crews for our ships. I long for the day that my space marines can storm aboard an enemy ship and take it over from the inside.
More options for interacting with the native NPC population would be a good thing, too. CCP seems to be heading in this direction, with hints of an Interbus small package shipping service, more intelligent behavior from NPC ships in space, and other possible enhancements - like possibly being able to hire NPC ships for escort duty. I'd love to see this happen.
Better mining, please!
Let us mine planetary rings with small cooperative teams. Let us track down and mine rare materials from comets. Let us be able to fine-tune our production rates from asteroid mining with some active gameplay, if we wish.
Please, just make mining more interesting. Somehow.
Better missions, please!
I think this one may actually have a chance of appearing soon-ish, as CCP Affinity has already mentioned that there is a two-year plan for improving PvE in the game, including the addition of dynamically generated missions. Adding more unpredictability to the mission system will go a long way at retaining casual players. I can't wait to see it.

There are lots of other cool features I'd like to see in EVE Online, but I'd be very happy if CCP Games added one or more of the big things I've described here. I'll continue to watch the dev blogs, and hope.
